IAIN BALLAMY

Iain Ballamy is a key figure in contemporary European jazz with a distinctive musical voice merging avant-garde experimentation with accessible melodic sensibility. Listed in the BBC’s ‘100 Jazz Greats’ between Count Basie and Chet Baker, Ballamy has been described as urbane, original, and uncompromising.
His work merges both strong jazz and classical references but remains un-encumbered by formality and tradition. Significant partnerships include innovative big band Loose Tubes, Bill Bruford’s Earthworks, Django Bates’ Human Chain, Anglo/ Norwegian duo ‘Food’.
Acclaimed releases for ECM include ‘Quiet inlet’ by Food with Thomas Strønen, and ‘Quercus’ with folk singer June Tabor and pianist Huw Warren which masterfully blends folk and chamber music with improvisation.
With Nick Ramm (piano), Steve Watts (bass) and Mike Pickering (drums)
Friday 15th May, 8pm EDT
DUNCAN HEMSTOCK

Music from the golden era of jazz! Think Louis Armstrong’s Hot Five, Benny Goodman Quartet, Jelly Roll Morton etc, all played by five highly talented specialists of the style, including Pete Horsfall (trumpet), Matt Carter (piano), Harry Evans (bass) and Joe Dessauer (drums).
Originally from Adelaide, but now living in London, Duncan is relishing the many opportunities to perform for dancers and concert audiences alike throughout the UK and Europe. He brings his joy for life and music to every performance, always delivering with a smile and a cheeky quip or two. His clarinet playing is not only influenced by Goodman, but also the fiery intent of Edmond Hall, while his Tenor Saxophone approach is inspired by the great Lester Young.
| SUNDAY 17th May, 2pm Dulwich Hamlet FC Bar |

Jazz from the Jabberwock’s Jaws is a wild concert specially designed to introduce families to the burbling brilliance of live jazz. Listen as the legendary beast trade its bite for a swinging beat, brought to life by a lineup of top musicians. The frontline features the vorpal saxophone duo of Ned Bennett and Horace Cardew, alongside the Bandersnatch brass of Sid Gauld on trumpet and Felix Fardell on trombone. Providing the galumphing groove is a powerhouse rhythm section: Neil Casey on piano, Steve Watts on bass, and Chris Nickolls on drums.
From the mysterious shadows of the mimsy borogoves to the triumphant snicker-snack of the horn section, this performance reimagines Lewis Carroll’s nonsense poem through clever syncopation and infectious energy. It’s a perfect introduction to the genre—capturing the imagination of children and the ears of jazz aficionados alike. Beware the Jabberwock? No—join the Jabberwock for a session that is truly Calloo-Callay!
All children and adults require a ticket for each event, unless otherwise stated. Where offered, children’s tickets are for 0-16 year olds unless otherwise stated. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
